Abstract
  • Grand Coulee Dam is a massive concrete structure on the Columbia River in north-central Washington state. The dam and its related resource developments reflect evolving strategies of resource management in North America during the 20th century. They symbolize five themes: stimulation of economic development in remote areas; government enhancement of agricultural production and settlement in dry areas; cooperative management of international water resources; increasing the scale of interregional trade; and growing concern for environmental and ecological values.
