Abstract	Puerto Rico’s climate varies greatly even if it is categorized as a tropical climate. On some parts of the island, there are desert like conditions where rainfall averages 36 inches a year unlike the western side or the central part of the island where rainfall averages 200 inches.1 Heavy rains cause extreme nutrient leaching of the island's soils affecting the island's agricultural sector (Figure A). Some of the island's crops are coffee, rice, sugarcane, bananas, and plantains.2 All which extensively use up the nutrients in the soil due to the conventional farming practices. Could cover cropping be a solution to nutrient leaching on the island and reduce fertilizer inputs?
