Abstract
  • The Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) is the department responsible for providing reasonable accommodation to students with documented disabilities. Each term, SSD serves approximately 500 students and receives hundreds of requests for various services. These services range from alternative testing, alternative formats, notetaking, classroom relocation, and requests for tables and chairs to be placed in the classrooms. The number of requests has been growing steadily and in order to provide accommodations on a timely basis, SSD had to find an efficient way to handle students requests. In 2002 alone, the department handled requests for various accommodations in 300 classes. The process was very stressful and tedious. This paper reports on a SSD’s effort to create a web application to reduce the numbers of hours required to manually process accommodation requests. This application focused on two areas where SSD believed it was possible to increase the productivity of the service coordinators and promoting SSD ease of requesting accommodation to students. The two areas are automation of various processes and web accessibility.
