Abstract
  • This study examines the relationships among variables influencing solar access in the Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Area. The analysis is based on a random sample of approximately 400 single-family homes in 21 local jurisdictions outside the city limits of Portland. Relationships between percentage of available sunlight and selected variables were examined by using t-tests, correlation analysis and regression analysis. Findings indicate that homes elongated along the east-west axis, located on east-west streets, and with north-south lot orientation have significantly greater solar access. These and other results will be helpful in developing ordinances to provide and protect solar access in local Oregon communities.
