Abstract
  • This paper aims to increase the knowledge on establishment practices for four fast-growing species (Guazuma crinita Mart., Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla, Bixa orellana L., Psidium guajava L.) in areas degraded by gold mining in the Peruvian Amazon. The study was carried out in Madre de Dios region, located in the southeast of Peru, in sites degraded by intensive mining. The study, that started in 2017, aims to quantify the effects of biochar and fertilizers on seedling growth and survival. The treatments tested were control, biochar, enriched biochar (biochar enriched with efficient microorganisms and fertilizers), and organic liquid fertilizer plus N-P-K. After three growing seasons, strong differences are shown in the survival of the four species studied, but no effect of soil treatments on growth increased. Psidium guajava showed the highest survival rate and Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla showed the larger growth. No treatments by species effect were observed on seedling growth and survival. Further research is needed to provide better alternatives to increase seedling survival and growth in areas degraded by mining in the Peruvian Amazon.
