Abstract
  • During COVID-19 case investigations, demographic data are collected to better understand the epidemiology of the disease. Demographic data includes Race, Ethnicity, Language and Disability (REALD) and Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) questions. This is of particular interest as collection of granular data of REALD is required by House Bill 2134, while collection of SOGI is not. Examining the completeness of REALD and SOGI data is necessary as it helps better ensure the quality of data that can be used to inform programmatic and policy-level decisions and public health messaging that is culturally appropriate and accessible to our communities. This information presents a unique opportunity for local and state agencies to engage with the community to reduce health disparities due to the pandemic and prevent the further spread of COVID-19. This secondary data analysis is a quality assessment of REALD and SOGI data collected during COVID-19 case investigations in Oregon during 2020 and identifies demographic trends through descriptive statistics. Our analysis found that while REALD data is more complete than SOGI, the data is still lacking due to low response rates. Based on these findings, further research is needed to evaluate what intersections of identities may be hidden within the data.
