Abstract
  • In recent years, participation in outdoor recreation has increased, with nearly half of Americans partaking annually (Thomsen, Powell, & Monz, 2018). The goal of recreation management is to provide diverse opportunities for leisure services through preservation of parks, open space, recreational facilities, and programs for park visitors. Management activities can affect many aspects of benefits received by park visitors. By understanding these benefits, managers are more able to assist visitors in attaining them, which may result in high quality recreation opportunities. To better understand the benefits and experiences received by park visitors as a direct result of outdoor recreation and management, a study was conducted based primarily on a survey of recreational visitors to Stanislaus River Parks (SRP) in California. Results from this study revealed that park visitors do in fact receive many of the outdoor recreational benefits identified within previous studies. Based on visitors’ experiences and ratings of potential future management actions, I developed several recommendations for SRP to further develop these recreational benefits.
