Abstract
  • An automated library system should be capable of providing at least all of the information and capabilities of existing manual catalogs. In addition, an automated system must provide the capability of manipulating that information to produce varying types of reports and statistics. This paper briefly: - describes historical representations of bibliographic data in western civilization, - gives an overview of the general concept of relational databases, - discusses the major elements of the MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging) communications format as implemented by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), - comments on descriptive cataloging requirements of an automated system, and - covers a preliminary investigation of the possibility of applying a general relational data base management system to the development of an automated library system. In particular, the applicability of using Informix-SQL to develop an online public access catalog (OPAC) is considered.
