Abstract
  • Efficient management of natural resources requires the ability to utilize and integrate information. The challenge is to fully utilize this information base with its various degrees of accessibility, ever increasing volume and dispersed nature. The manager must be familiar with media types used to store, manage and communicate this information. New technologies are constantly evolving which will be instrumental in helping us deal with the ever increasing amounts of information. Furthermore, these new technologies will aid in more effective application of information. For example, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been developed to input, store, manipulate, and output spatial data. Most GIS's use Data Base Management Systems (DS) technology which enables storage and manipulation of very large data sets. Some packages even include statistical analysis capabilities which permit the analysis and comparison of large data sets.
