Abstract
  • Several learning processes which can be used with computing machinery are discussed in this paper. Consideration is given to what has been done in this field in the past as well as to what is now being done. New ideas which might be applied to such study are introduced. An example machine is designed to demonstrate the different learning processes discussed and to illustrate many of the advantages and disadvantages of each. The conclusion is reached that such a machine, designed to learn and profit from past experience, is possible but somewhat impractical for any problem of very high complexity. Methods which might improve the basic machine are studied; and one particular method is suggested which might prove both practical and efficient.
