Abstract
  • To improve energy efficiency of industrial processes, heat exchangers are used to transfer thermal energy between different process streams. The compact size and increased efficiency of microchannel based recuperators make them appealing in extreme environments where costly superalloys are mandatory. Due to the high manufacturing cost of microchannel heat exchanges they are only used in niche applications where other low cost alternatives are not available. This work combines a bottom-up manufacturing cost model and a developed pricing methodology to accomplish technology valuation of a novel 15 kW nickel superalloy heat exchanger hermetically sealed by laser welding. The integrated spreadsheet based bottom-up cost model and pricing tool, provides real-time feedback for the engineering design team to continuously monitor the effect on company's profit during the design process. Using Capital Assets Pricing Model (CAPM), Net Present Value (NPV) analysis and market pricing of potential product substitute it was determine that the capital investment of the designed dedicated manufacturing plant that produces 1,000 units per year will be recovered in 3 years with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 36.51%.
