Abstract
  • This report summarizes published and unpublished source material characterizing the Pacific weathervane scallop (Pecten [Patinopecten] caurinus) population and fishery in Alaska (1967-1981). The Gulf of Alaska environment, scallop exploratory research (1953-1979), and aspects of scallop life history are reviewed. A commercial fishery for scallops has existed in Alaska since 1967. Three major stock units have been defined for the Gulf of Alaska scallop population. Commercial beds have been exploited primarily from the 64-128 m depth zone yielding 4,997 t of scallop meat worth an estimated $15.8 million (ex-vessel) during 1968-1981. The Kodiak district of the westward region has contributed 67 percent of the total harvest and the Yakutat district of the southeast region, 33 percent. Scallops contributed 2.7 percent of the total Alaska shellfish harvest for 1968-1981 and represent 3.9 percent of the total U.S. domestic sea scallop harvest for the same period. Catch per unit of effort was generally above average from 1968-1974, but has been below the historical average during 1975-1981. Knowledge of Alaska scallop population dynamics is limited. Information on age and growth, shell height and meat weight, and biomass is reviewed. Fishery exploitation rates and meat yield are discussed. Additional analysis on shell height versus meat and whole weight is presented. A von-Bertalanffy growth model is developed and fitted to scallops from four Gulf of Alaska locations. The management rationale and Alaska regulatory structure is reviewed. Conflicts and impacts of the scallop fishery are discussed.
