Abstract
  • This dissertation seeks to understand Yi farmers’ livelihoods in the midst of an agricultural transition in Yunnan, Southwest China. This dissertation examines a community’s traditional knowledge related to wild edible plants (WEPs), analyzes socio-ecological vulnerability and resilience in the face of agricultural transition from subsistence farming to cash cropping, and explores the impacts caused by internal migration and cash remittances. Semi-structured interviews, cultural models, surveys, and participant observation were carried out in seven villages in Zhanhe Township. Results show that farmers in Zhanhe share a common cultural model on the knowledge about wild edible plants (WEPs), but a trend of knowledge loss among generations is also detected. Policy that was designed to help farmers earn cash income put farmers in even greater vulnerability. Moreover, migration and remittances play an important role in influencing local farmers’ traditional knowledge of WEPs, and shape their risk perceptions and future agricultural strategies. Therefore, this study suggests that when developing new policies, it is vital to understand local socio-economic and political dynamics to ensure the success of implementation.
