  • Tsunamis pose a major threat to Oregon's coastal communities. Evacuation is the best method to mitigate for tsunamis. Planning for tsunami evacuation is underway in Oregon's coastal communities. Current methodologies use tsunami inundation models and population for evacuation planning. Tsunamis from a Cascadia subduction zone (CSZ) earthquake will create more complex response issues than these current methodologies account for. Coseismic landslides, liquefaction, intense ground shaking and hazardous material release further complicate current evacuation plans. In addition, the lack of consistent secondary hazard information to the public and the local governments results in simplified tsunami evacuation methodologies. The importance of assessing multiple parameters for multiple hazards in tsunami evacuation planning has national and worldwide implications. The purpose of this project was to develop a Coastal Catastrophic Hazard GIS template that incorporates the complexity of CSZ earthquake/tsunami events into evacuation planning and to support the consistent development of tsunami evacuation maps.
