Abstract
  • An evaluation of the service time of an activated carbon adsorption column and the organic carbon removal efficiency treating activated sludge process effluent was completed at aerator detention times of three, five, and ten hours. Parameters used for evaluation of treatment were biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, and carbon service time. As a result of this research study the following conclusions were made: 1. Direct filtration of an activated sludge process effluent at low hydraulic loading provides adequate particulate matter removal to prevent fouling of the activated carbon beds. 2. The BOD removal by sand filtration-activated carbon adsorption varies between 75 and 92 percent when aerator detention time is varied from three to ten hours. 3. The service time of an activated carbon adsorption bed is decreased as the activated sludge process aerator detention time is increased.
