Abstract
  • Preparation for marriage has been in a process of evolution since the early 1960s. At present, preparation for marriage is primarily focused on several pre-marital group counseling sessions. This study examined the impact of a six week post-wedding follow-up program with newly married couples who had participated in a seven week pre-marital program. Participants had been married at least three months and not longer than 13 months. Members of the Treatment group experienced significant reduction in problem intensity over the six weeks. Members of the Control group experienced an increase in problem intensity over the same six week period. The reduction in problem intensity supported the hypothesis: Post-wedding follow-up leads to a decrease in problem intensity in the newly married individual's relationship with his/her spouse, even though he/she had participated in premarital counseling.
