Abstract
  • Site index and height growth equations for mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana (Bong.) Carr.) were developed from 37 trees located in the Deschutes Nationa1 Forest. Initial analysis indicated the need for stratification by habitat type. Preliminary community classifications were used to develop three strata for the study. Two approaches to model development were compared: one linear in its expression of the relationship of site index to height, the other nonlinear. The results of the study were site index and height equations for two of the three habitat strata using the linear method, and a hypothesis of the form of the site index-height-age relationship on the third stratum Recommendations for the application and interpretation of the equations were presented.
