  • Y-Zeolite catalysts have the potential to promote the shape-selective conversion of glucose to oxygenated hydrocarbons at fairly low temperature (100 to 130°C). Reaction of glucose solution with H-Y Zeolite catalyst powder was carried out in a well-mixed batch reactor. This reaction was studied as a function of reaction time (0 to 24 hours), temperature (100 to 130°C), catalyst loading (10:1 to 1:1 glucose:Y-Zeolite), and initial glucose concentration (12% to 58% g glucose/g solution). Unreacted glucose and reaction products were analyzed by HPLC. The dehydration of glucose solution by H-Y Zeolite catalyst powder resulted in 90% conversion at 2:1 glucose: H-Y Zeolite and 130°C. At these conditions, maximum levulinic acid and formic acid yields were 15% and 30% respectively. A pseudo first-order process was used to estimate the apparent rate constant for glucose conversion at various temperatures. From the Arrhenius equation, the apparent activation energy was estimated as 22.06 kCal/mole for glucose solution initially at 12% weight. Based on the product distribution data, a reaction model for glucose dehydration to HMF, levulinic acid, and formic acid in Y-Zeolite catalysts was proposed.
