Abstract
  • Photolysis of pentachlorobenzene was carried out in the absence of an electron donor species at 254 nm in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactant solution. The results are consistent with the excited triplet undergoing homolytic cleavage of a C-Cl bond in competition with formation of the excimer, in which the radical anion undergoes C-Cl bond fission through a transition state with a bent localized radical center. The local concentration of the solute and the total probability of encounter of excited state with ground state pentachlorobenzene in a micelle were used to explain the kinetic data. Significant amounts of tetrachlorobromobenzenes were produced as byproducts. A mechanism for the photosubstitution reaction is proposed. The three isomers of the tetrachlorobromobenzene were prepared. Pentachlorobenzene in CTAB solution was irradiated using a sun lamp. The degradation behavior and its relationship to toxic waste disposal are discussed.
