Abstract or Summary
  • This paper discusses the design, construction, and use of a prototype expert system shell, EXE. EXE is non-conventional in that it does not provide a traditional forward or backward chaining inference mechanism. Instead, it allows the domain expert to control the logic flow of the system in a dynamic fashion. EXE achieves the power of a backward/forward chaining system while providing the non-programmer domain expert with an easy-to-understand concept of questions and answers. EXE provides the domain expert with tools to incorporate external PCDOS programs and graphic screens in the construction of a prototype expert system. EXE runs on IBM-PC hardware without excessive needs for resources or license and cost requirements. With the above features, EXE assists domain experts in entering knowledge into a system without the aid of knowledge engineers.
