Abstract
  • This work is an attempt to develop a simple physical description for the initial interactions between a bacterial cell and a substrate surface. This is done by adopting a view that regards bacterial surface biomolecules not as secondary and add-on contributors to the potential energy function that characterizes the overall interaction, but as the fundamental building blocks whose various features (e.g. charge, elasticity, chemical composition, and etc.) give rise to interactions that manifest at various spatial scales. Within the proposed framework, hysteresis in bacterial contact and the role of cell surface heterogeneities in shaping the overall interaction are explored. The analysis is based on acknowledging the existence of various characteristic spatial scales during bacterial adhesion and the potential scale-crossing role of surface biomolecules on the overall potential energy function.
