Abstract
  • The primary objective of this study was two-fold: (1) to assess home owners awareness about issues pertaining to their septic systems; (2) and to determine the effect climate, proper care and maintenance have on septic tank performance in rural Benton County. Participants in this study were randomly selected by Benton County Information Resources Management using property tax codes. Of the 563 surveys sent out via mail, 55 came back from the post office as return-to-sender, a total of 391 surveys were returned, 22 of which were incomplete or unusable, resulting in a response rate of 65%. Ninety-eight percent(%) of respondents indicated that they knew where their septic system was located, and 91 % indicated that they knew where the manhole was located. Wet weather did not appear to have a significant adverse effect on septic system performance with only 2.8% of the respondents reporting system backups, and 4.3% noticed a foul odor after it rains. There was a significant difference between the homes that had pumped their system and a reduction in the number of septic system problems. Homes that pumped their septic systems reduced the frequency of septic system problems by a statistically significant amount x2=35.08, df=l, p<.001.
