Abstract
  • Detailed phytosociological and physical data were gathered from six grass-fern balds in the Oregon Coast Range, Monmouth Peak, Grass Mountain, Prairie Peak, Roman Nose Mountain, Tyee Mountain, and Saddle Mountain. Panchromatic and color infrared air photography guided sampling within individual balds. The resultant floristic data was manipulated by a Braun-Blanquet tabular analysis. Five plant communities were identified, provisionally classified, and mapped. a) The Lomatium Martindalei provisional association consists of mosses, grasses, and low-growing herbaceous plants and occurs on thin soils. b) The Elymus glaucus provisional association is a bracken fern-dominated community with grass, and- occurs on deep soil. It has two provisional subassociations, c) the Carex Rossii subassociation that is stable and d) the Cynosurus echinatus subassociation, a seral community. e) Finally, the Viola adunca community, referred to as a plant group, is a persistent, though poorly defined vegetation unit found on deep soils.
