Abstract
  • Forty-six morphological characters were used in a study of Triticum turgidum ssp. carthlicum (2n = 28) and specimens of carthlicum-like forms of Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare (2n = 42). The morphological variation patterns within these groups were examined using stepwise discriminant analysis. These results indicate that specimens studied could be significantly resolved into two groups by the discriminant analysis of the morphological traits without any overlap. This statistical technique was particularly helpful in selecting a set of fourteen variables that best separate the two groups and serve as a base to assign properly unknown specimens into the groups delineated in this analysis. The glume awn length, previously described as a key feature in the identification and separation of these two forms, showed interaction with the environment, thus not supporting its use as the sole trait for delineating among these groups. On the other hand, the degree of stem solidness, mainly in the upper internode, has proved to give enough precision to assure separation of carthlicum from "carthlicum-like" forms. However, it does not have the power to discriminate carthlicum from other tetraploid wheat species which share the same characteristic. None of the variables isolated provides adequate information for practical and precise separation of carthlicum from the carthlicum "like" forms. As a result, it is imperative to consider a group of characters when attempting to identify members of this complex.
