Abstract
  • The development of new electronic devices and design procedures applicable to ternary switching circuits suggests that it might be desirable to use ternary arithmetic in direct digital control systems. The advantages of decimal, binary, and ternary arithmetic in digital computers are discussed and a set of rules for signed -digit ternary arithmetic is given. Some of the more useful kinds of ternary switching algebra are reviewed and several procedures for the realization of ternary switching functions are illustrated. Some ternary switching circuits using field -effect transistors are described and a new notation which appears to be convenient for describing ternary switching functions is proposed. The control system of an electric power station is discussed and the characteristics of digital and analog components in such a system compared. Possible ways of using ternary devices in the digital portions of a control system are shown and their advantages pointed out. It is concluded that the use of ternary arithmetic would be practical and economical in control systems requiring more than 10⁷ bits of random access storage, and that development of the necessary technology should be continued.
