Abstract
  • A significant number of Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings exist in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States of America that is a region of high seismicity, which could be subjected to both crustal and subduction zone earthquakes. The catastrophic and brittle failures associated with URM buildings in the past strong earthquakes highlight the pressing need to improve their seismic performance by implementing the efficient and the cost-effective retrofit solutions. Most of the existing retrofit solutions are expensive and rather complicated to implement. More importantly, most of them are responsible for modifying the mass and the aesthetic appearance of the buildings. The main goal of this study is to propose a cost-effective and aesthetically appealing retrofit solution by making use of Near Surface Mounted (NSM) reinforcing steel bars inserted into the pre-cut grooves made on the surface of the walls. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed retrofit solution, a series of laboratory tests including pull-out tests, diagonal compression tests, and in-plane cyclic tests were executed. In addition, the Applied Element Method (AEM), which is based on discrete crack approach is used to model the behavior of the non-retrofitted and retrofitted masonry structures at both component and building scales. In this study, it is shown that the nonlinear AEM models are able to predict the in-plane strength, stiffness, and failure modes of the URM and retrofitted masonry structures with reasonable accuracy. While both experimental and numerical results indicate that the NSM reinforcing steel bars can be used for retrofitting URM structures, and numerical results indicate that the retrofit is also effective in the out-of-plane directions, further studies are recommended to evaluate the laboratory performance and to validate numerical models of the retrofitted specimens in the out-of-plane direction.
