Abstract
  • Absorption of methyl iodide by aqueous hydrazine solutions within spray chambers was studied theoretically and experimentally. The objective of this work was to evaluate the absorption rate of airborne methyl iodide by sprays of hydrazine solutions under conditions expected to exist in post-accident nuclear reactor containment atmospheres. Experimental effort included measurements of absorption of methyl iodide from the gas phase of spray chambers (1.5 and 3.6 cubic meters in volume), measurements of liquid film volume on the vertical walls of a spray chamber, measurements of the partition coefficient of methyl iodide between water and a saturated steam-air vapor, and measurements of spray drop size. For puff releases of methyl iodide, gas phase removal half-times varied from seven minutes to 125 minutes, depending on the temperature, spray flow rate, and hydrazine concentration. The absorption rate measured was in agreement with theoretical predictions based on absorption with simultaneous first order chemical reaction.
