Abstract
  • The role of nematodes (Diplogaster lheritieri Maupas 1919) as excretors of pathogenic organisms was studied. Salmonella typhi and Salmonella wichita were fed to nematodes for two days. The nematodes were surface sterilized with free chlorine. The activity of the chlorine was stopped by the addition of sodium thiosulfate followed by transfer of the worms to one of four liquid environments or to a nonselective agar plate. Recovery of excreted salmonellae was determined by the presence or absence of these organisms in the liquid environments or on the agar plate. Salmonella wichita was recovered in more trials than was Salmonella typhi. As the nutrient value of the suspending media decreased, it was noted that excretion of the organisms by the nematodes decreased.
