Abstract
  • Ultraviolet spectroscopy and dispersive solubility parameters correlated to the ratios of retention times have proven valuable in classification of gas chromatography stationary phases by the donor-acceptor properties. Iodine was directly dissolved into stationary phases and the absorption frequency shift of complexes was correlated with the carbon tetrachloride/chloroform retention ratio on each stationary phases to examine the donor property. The dispersive solubility parameters which were calculated from refractive indices of stationary phases were correlated with the m-xylene/p-xylene retention ratio to examine the acceptor property of the stationary phases. The results suggest that the relative retention time of chloroform with respect to carbon tetrachloride is a useful measure of the donor properties of stationary phases and that the ratio of retention times of m- and p-xylene is a good indicator of acceptor properties.
