Abstract
  • A single item is to be produced over a given number of time periods to satisfy the future requirements which are subject to fluctuations. The production rate and work force level for each time period are to be decided in order to minimize the production cost where the costs for regular payroll, hiring and layoff, overtime, inventory and shortage are known functions of these two decisions in each period. This thesis attempts to present and evaluate the decision models suggested in the literature for handling this type of problem. Some cost elements are added to make the problem more complete and practical. The derivations of solution methods have been simplified and examples are added to reinforce the application. Finally, comparisons among various methods and conclusions are drawn, and suggestions for future research in this area are made.
