  • Five-year- old 'Ananasnaya' hardy kiwifruit [Actinidia arguta (Sieb. & Zucc.) Miq.] vines in a commercial vineyard were subjected to flower/fruit thinning in 1999. Treatments of thinning flowers before bloom (BB; June 2 to 5) or fruit after set (AFS; - July 1 to 7) at three different seventies (15%, 30% and 50%) were compared to Unthinned vines. Average yield of vines thinned BB or AFS was significantly lower than un-thinned vines. However, marketable yield from vines thinned 15% and 30% BB was not significantly different from un-thinned vines. Thinning regardless of the severity or the time it was done, increased fruit volume and king fruit volume an average of 16% and 24%, respectively. The most effective thinning treatment was thinning vines by 30% BB which did not reduce total or marketable yield, but significantly increased fruit weight (15%), marketable fruit weight (13%), king weight (18%) and king volume (28%). King fruit were more affected by thinning than the two adjacent lateral fruit. There was no difference in fruit size between king and lateral fruit in un-thinned vines. Fresh fruit growth followed a sigmoidal curve in all treatments. There was no thinning treatment effect on percent soluble solids (°Brix), seed number/fruit, seed weight, or leaf area index. There was a positive linear relationship between °Brix and volume of the king fruit from whole clusters, but there was no correlation between °Brix and volume of king fruit with one or no laterals present or lateral fruit. There was a positive quadratic relationship between fruit weight and seed number or seed dry weight. A reduction in crop load per vine by thinning caused a reduction in leaf area.
