Abstract
  • The advances in the nuclear sciences over the past sixty years have yielded many beneficial technologies and applications, such as power generation, food irradiation, and medical diagnostic devices and techniques. However, these advances have also allowed the advent of nuclear and radiological weapons. This paper will focus on one type of radiological weapon, known as a radiological dispersal device, and the potential prompt health effects it may cause. The research to date done on the effects of such devices has focused on outdoor releases of radioactive material propelled by an explosion. This paper will provide an analysis of multiple indoor dispersal scenarios using Cesium-137 and Cobalt-60 as the dispersed isotopes, and the associated dose from internal and external exposure. All of the assumptions that went into the construction of the scenario will be considered, and the results from the scenarios will be discussed. The main conclusion that can be drawn is that in a scenario similar to those described in this paper, the internal dose will be the critical factor to consider, both for first responders arriving at the dispersal site and for the medical staff who are treating the exposed individuals.
