Disparities in Physical Activity Experienced by Children with Disabilities: Secondary Analysis of the National Survey of Children’s Health 2016-2017

Abstract
  • Children with disabilities report some of the lowest physical activity (PA) levels among U.S. children. Estimating the magnitude of PA disparities has been previously challenged by underreporting and variability in subsampling of children with disabilities. The present research leverages the redesigned National Survey of Children’s Health to estimate population-level disparities in PA engagement, and its determinants, between children with and without disabilities. The first manuscript estimates and compares the prevalence of meeting the most current national PA guidelines, and sports participation, among children with and without disabilities. The second manuscript more closely examines the social determinants of PA and the relative contribution of disability status in predicting PA outcomes. The final manuscript shifts attention to children with special health care needs and examines the association between receiving comprehensive healthcare in a medical home and meeting PA guidelines. Anticipated outcomes from this research include more robust estimates of PA disparities experienced by children with disabilities to serve as a baseline for monitoring trends over time. Moreover, examination of how disability intersects with other determinants of PA will lend to more refined identification of subpopulations at-risk for inactivity. Identifying healthcare practices associated with higher likelihood of engaging in sufficient activity may highlight viable avenues for intervention for children with special healthcare needs, a priority population. Collectively, knowledge generated from this research may inform inclusive PA health promotion efforts and support stakeholders in achieving the HealthyPeople 2020 objective to increase the proportion of U.S. children who are sufficiently active.
