  • An attempt has been made to elucidate the biosynthetic precursor of ethylene in the mold P. digitatum. By application of basic radiotracer methodology and the utilization of several specifically labeled radiochemical substrates, it has been possible to demonstrate that the internal carbon atoms of C-4 dicarboxylic acids such as succinate, fumarate and malate contribute to the ethylene carbon skeleton. In attempting to further elucidate the pathway of ethylene formation, β-aIanine, acrylic acid and propionic acid were employed as metabolic substrates to test the hypothesis that acrylic acid could be the precursor of ethylene. β-alanine and propionic acid were found to be metabolized by other pathways unrelated to acrylic acid formation. However, when acrylate was used as a test substrate, a significant incorporation of the C-2 and C-3 carbon atoms into the ethylene molecule was demonstrated. Thus, this work strongly suggests that acrylic acid is the immediate precursor of ethylene in P. digitatum.
