  • Computer simulations and experiments were used to determine the basis for skewness and inequality in size structures (frequency distributions of Individual plant sizes) prior to self-thinning mortality. In simulated stands, density-dependent neighborhood heterogeneity caused variability in the growth rate of individuals with the same size, and such variability caused skewness to increase with time. In experimental stands of Pseudotsuga menziesii, skewness and inequality were caused by variance in growth rate of individuals with the same initial mass. Available space (measured by Thiessen polygons), but not maternal parent, was a source of such variation in these stands. In experimental stands of Fraxinus mandshurica in China, skewness and inequality increased with density and age. Vertical distributions of leaf area, light, and specific leaf area indicated that competition between large and small seedlings for light was asymmetric. However, such competition did not cause relative growth rates to be correlated with size. A stochastic model of size structure dynamics was more appropriate for these stands than deterministic models that do not account for variation in the growth rates of plants with the same initial sizes.
