Abstract
  • The equations which govern the motion of a rigid satellite in an inverse-square force field exhibit a weak coupling between the translation of, and the rotation about the center of mass. The effects of this translational-rotational coupling on the equilibrium positions in a circular orbit, and their stabilities are examined. Linearized equations determine unstable regions in the space of the three parameters in the system. Following an energy test method of Routh, the complete equations are examined to determine stability where the linearized equations give characteristic roots with zero real parts. The effect of the coupling is a slight shift in some of the boundaries between stable and unstable regions. It does not upset the stability of the system, studied previously, in which the coupling is neglected.
