  • The conversation regarding transgender students in the context of women's colleges is inherently complicated due to the binary gender system that the existence of women's colleges reinforce. The primary goal of this phenomenological research was to examine the lived experiences of transgender college students at U.S. women's colleges. Because the experiences of the study participants are uniquely situated in the context of a women's college, a secondary goal was to examine the current policies and practices at women's colleges which address transgender students. Two methods of data collection were used in this qualitative study to gain insight into the complexities of women's colleges and transgender students: semi-structured interviews (n=10 participants) and a document review (n=38 institutions). Informed by Schlossberg's (1989) theory of challenge and support, the data collected yielded four central themes related to the how transgender student experiences women's colleges campuses: (a) (In)visibility, (b) Negotiating Spaces, (c) Support, Comfort & Safety, and (d) A Call to Action. Using identity politics as a catalyst for change, the recommendations advocate for women's colleges to improve their policies and practices to better support their transgender students.
