Abstract
  • Experimental crosses between Rana pretiosa pretiosa Baird and Girard and Rana cascadae Slater, resulted in viable hybrids. Reciprocal differences at the time of fertilization are indicated. A high level of success in producing viable hybrids can be obtained if Rana pretiosa pretiosa is the female of the parent species, The hybrid is characteristically intermediate to the parent species. The hybrid is quantitatively intermediate to the parent species in the characteristics of larval body width /tail depth ratios, developmental time, and mouth parts, Statistically treated larval body width/tail depth ratios of natural populations can be used to determine the amount and direction of natural hybridization between the species.
