The effect of self-reference upon memory processing of the content of a television documentary in older adults

  • The study investigates the influence of the self-reference effect upon the amount of main and subordinate ideas which older adults can recall and recognize after viewing the television documentary entitled, The Xinquana: Aborigines of South America. The participants are native English-speaking Americans who are 50 years old or older. The independent variables are the self-reference orienting questions, age, and the length of response to the orienting questions. The dependent variable is the amount of main and subordinate ideas participants can recall and recognize after viewing the documentary. Findings show that (1) participants in the self-reference groups did not score significantly higher than those in the non-self-reference group; (2) participants in emotional connotation, personal relevance, and self-identification groups did not significantly differ from one another in recall or recognition tests; (3) when the self-reference-orienting questions were excluded, younger participants scored significantly higher than older participants in both recall and recognition tests; (4) when the orienting questions were included, younger participants in emotional connotation and personal relevance groups scored significantly higher than older participants; (5) when the orienting questions were excluded, participants who gave longer responses scored significantly higher in recall and recognition tests; and (6) when the self-reference orienting questions were included, those with longer responses in emotional connotation and personal relevance groups scored significantly higher in recall and recognition tests. Recommendations for future studies on the self-reference effect and learning from television programs are: (1) further study should be conducted with different age groups, cultures, other types of learning, and should include variations in gender, economical and educational background; (2) it should further investigate the role of the self-reference effect upon the comprehension of other types of television programming; and (3) there should be further investigation on the format and the design of the self-reference orientation.
