  • Diclofop (2- [4 -(2, 4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid), formulated as the methyl ester, selectively kills barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus -galli (L.) Beauv.] in several crops when applied postemergence. Studies were conducted to determine the effect of soil moisture, barnyardgrass age, and site of exposure on control of barnyardgrass with diclofop. Soil moisture content of 10% or more was needed for satisfactory diclofop control of slow-growing barnyard grass when soil and air temperature were suboptimal for barnyardgrass growth. Soil moisture was less critical with rapidly-growing plants. Site of exposure studies with glass-faced root boxes showed that both roots and emerging shoots absorbed diclofop from the soil. Both roots and shoots were inhibited more when diclofop was applied to the root zone than to the shoot zone. Selective exposure of prescribed plant parts in the field showed that phytotoxicity from diclofop applied postemergence was greatest when shoots and the soil were both exposed. Barnyardgrass control increased in the shoot-protected and unprotected treatments with increasing amounts of post-treatment overhead irrigation. Two-leaf and four-leaf barnyardgrass plants were equally susceptible to diclofop applied postemergence but resistance increased with age in plants older than the four-leaf stage.
