  • A study to determine the oxygen transfer rates in selected waste liquids and to compare these rates with that of distilled water was performed. Tests using treated sewage and pulp and paper mill effluent were conducted in a model aeration tank. From the data, a, a ratio of the rate of oxygen transfer in a waste liquid to the rate of oxygen transfer in distilled water was obtained. During the test temperature, pH, surface tension, and solids concentration of the waste liquids were measured to see what effects these properties had on α. The following conclusions were reached: 1. The rates of oxygen transfer in the four tested waste liquids differed from the rates in distilled water. 2. For a given waste liquid, α generally increased with increasing total solids concentrations. 3. For some waste liquids, α increased with increasing temperatures. 4. No correlations were found between the values of α and the properties of pH and surface tension. 5. The differences in the values of α were the result of composite effects of several properties of the waste liquids.
