Abstract
  • Net Values is an Environmental Arts & Humanities thesis that centers around a research project of the same name. The research examines individual fishers’ perceptions of adverse economic and social impacts resulting from shifted fishing effort caused by the Oregon Marine Reserves, and looks to understand how fishers use their social values to communicate potential social impacts. These impacts were assessed through two distinct research agendas: 1) Affected Individual Fishers’ Perceptions of the Marine Reserve Economic Impacts, and 2) Affected Individual Fishers’ Social Value Perceptions in Relation to Identity, Occupation, and the Marine Reserves. Data for both research agendas were collected simultaneously through in-person interviews during the summer and fall of 2021. Ten interviews were conducted with fishers, who identified themselves as fishermen, from Garibaldi, Depoe Bay, and Port Orford. Interviews were analyzed to answer the questions outlined by both research agendas and five key findings emerged from each. These ten total findings were then synthesized to establish three comprehensive and critical findings. These three findings include: 1) fishermen perceive negative social and economic impacts, but appear more concerned about positive impacts they have not experienced or potential negative ones in the future, 2) their priorities of social or economic values are important to consider and complex, and 3) their social values contextualize perceived impacts from, and perceptions of, the marine reserves. The resulting thesis is presented in three parts:1) an introduction from the author describing the community and personal context of the research, 2) the research project presented as an agency report submitted to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and 3) a conclusion from the author reflecting on his situatedness within the findings and process of the research project itself.
