Abstract
  • A mechanistic based critical heat flux (CHF) correlation has been developed derived from a mass, momentum, and energy balance at a nucleation site for water. The trigger mechanism for the CHF condition is postulated to be related to the maximum boiling frequency on a heated surface. It is observed that dependency of results is directly related to the effective cavity size (surface conditions) and as such the effective cavity size is taken to be the single closure coefficient dependent on the system pressure and mass flux. The applicable range of the developed model is considered to be with inlet mass fluxes between 128 to 4300 kg/(m²-s), pressures between 4.5 to 15.6 MPa, and critical qualities between -0.03 to 1.0. The resulting standard error of the mechanistic CHF model is 12.9% with over 800 experimental data points utilized over these conditions to inform and confirm the development of the model using a bundle geometry.
