  • Bedrock meandering rivers are sinuous channels that pair steep bedrock outside banks with lower gradient slip-off slopes on the inside of bends. These rivers have the potential to record information on climatic and tectonic “external” forcings in their morphology (e.g., longitudinal profiles, strath terraces, channel and valley dimensions). However, geology and the internal dynamics of meandering can locally and regionally influence morphology and thereby modulate or mask external signals. This dissertation contributes to the empirical understanding of the characteristics of and controls on bedrock meandering through a combination of remote analysis of alluvial and bedrock meander wavelengths and a field investigation of the Buffalo National River, Arkansas, a cliff-forming end-member of bedrock meandering rivers located in the Ozark Plateaus.
