Abstract
  • An experimental study was conducted to determine the hydrodynamic forces on smooth and roughened circular cylinders as influenced by a nearby plane boundary. The ambient flow was perpendicular to the cylinder and parallel to the boundary. Measurements were taken in a water channel and a wind tunnel to obtain the influence of the boundary on the Strouhal number, lift and drag forces, and wake configuration. Reynolds numbers in the wind tunnel varied from 2 X 10⁴ to 8 X 10⁴, and the Reynolds number in the water channel was fixed at 5800. The value of CD for a smooth cylinder was found to increase about 20% to 60% as the cylinder neared the boundary, but at the boundary CD was about 15% less than the value in the free stream. Calculated values of CD based on the Strouhal number measured in the water channel compared favorably with CD values determined in the wind tunnel. The lift force was always positive due to wake effects.
