Abstract or Summary
  • The use of bromoxynil (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile) to control broadleaf weeds in cereal crops has become widespread. This herbicide has not always performed satisfactorily for reasons which were not clearly evident. The effects of temperature, light and humidity on the herbicidal activity of bromoxynil on coast fiddleneck, Amsinckia intermedia, were studied. Fiddleneck plants were treated approximately 16 days after seeding with one-half and one ounce of bromoxynil and placed in growth chambers under 550 and 1800 foot-candles of light and with high and low humidities. Three temperature ranges (32-40 F, 45- 60 F, and 70-90 F) were included, each with two humidity levels utilizing growth chambers for humidity control. In seven days the plants were evaluated for percent leaf injury, and harvested to obtain their fresh and dry weights. The data obtained from this experiment indicated that temperature had a major influence on the rate of bromoxynil activity. Light and humidity effects were less pronounced. At 32-40 F, the higher light intensity increased the rate of herbicidal activity of bromoxynil. This effect diminished as the temperature was raised.
