Abstract
  • Comic Toast is a novel depicting a transition period in the life of the comic book artist character, Monica Holliday. This document includes a prologue, which provides details of a trauma in Monica's distant past, in order to inform Monica's adult reactions to the situations she finds herself entangled in. Following the prologue are six of sixteen chapters. These chapters track Monica's process of acknowledging her dissatisfaction with her career, her halfhearted artistic pursuits, and her relationships, and detail some of the ways in which Monica both fails to and succeeds in changing her life. In writing and revising this document I worked to balance the narrative between sections of dialogue, exposition, and descriptions of the artwork Monica creates. My intention for the future of this novel is to collaborate with an artist who will illustrate some sections, further developing the character of Monica by visually depicting the comic frames and sketches the character creates.
