Abstract
  • There is an underrepresentation of minority groups and women in the field of mathematics. With growing interest in equity and inclusion within the mathematics education community, it is important to look at how such concepts can be implemented in the classroom. Equitable and inclusive teaching practices have been shown to improve underrepresented student success in mathematics classes. However, few studies have investigated how instructors of mathematics describe, understand, and implement equitable and inclusive practices in their classrooms. The purpose of this thesis is to look at how mathematics instructors view equity and inclusivity broadly and how they describe the specific equitable and inclusive practices they implement in their classrooms. Through interviews and classroom observations I aimed to understand the mathematics instructors’ perspectives and practices involving equity and inclusion. I will present the research literature in this area, my research methods, and my findings as two case studies.
