  • High data rate transmission has become an important challenge in today digital communication systems. One of the most difficult problems faced by engineers is to transmit data at sufficiently high rates through fading channels. This is the main motivation for the research presented herein. In this thesis, we investigate a new modulation scheme based on Walsh- Hadamard codes. We show that the modulator maps a uniform binary source to a set of symbols having a Gaussian-like distribution. We assess the performance of the original modulation scheme when the channel is of the flat Rayleigh fading plus Gaussian noise type. We present the results of our research in a progressive way. We first consider the utilization of 1-dimensional constellations (PAM) for transmission over the flat fading channel. We then look at the case of 2-dimensional constellations (QAM) before introducing a diversity technique called ‘coordinate interleaving’ for performance improvement. Monte Carlo simulations are performed for maximum likelihood and maximum a-posteriori detection. We also derive tight bounds or approximations of the error rates whenever possible.
