  • Deposition characteristics of magnesium silicate and calcium carbonate on a heated surface in cooling tower water using city water as make-up was investigated. Flow velocity, bulk temperature and calcium hardness were maintained constant at 5.3 ft/ sec, 95°F and 150 ppm as CaCO₃ respectively whereas surface temperature varied from 105°F to 165°F. Other water parameters varied over the duration of the investigation; pH increased slightly from 8.9 to 9.2; silica concentration changed from 80 to 135 ppm as SiO₂; magnesium hardness was relatively constant at 60 ± 10 ppm as CaCO₃; methyl orange alkalinity varied from 150 to 270 ppm as CaCO₃. It was found that the type of deposit formed is a strong function of methyl orange alkalinity and the criteria for the deposition of magnesium silicate and calcium carbonate have been defined. Asymptotic fouling resistances were correlated with surface temperatures according to Arrhenius type equation.
